The exhibition In Medias Res: Expanded celebrates the contributions of feminist and post-cyberfeminist artists who live in the vibrant city of Los Angeles. The artworks in this exhibition reflect today’s digital uprootedness from time-based narratives of the silver screen to invoke liminal spaces of belonging. They challenge conventional definitions of cities and urban identities in relation to mainstream media, geography and land ownership.
Originally curated as a part of the Feral File Web3 exhibition platform, In Medias Res: Expanded brings the virtual exhibit into a physical gallery space. The artists’ interventions in ceramics, video installation, expanded cinema, sculpture, painting and projection bring the myriad digital explorations into the physical, transcending the boundaries of artifice towards material reality. In media res - FEMMEBIT x feral file
Collecting begins AUGUST 17 w/Events starting August 15, 2023
LOS ANGELES, Calif., August 15, 2023 and August 17, 2023 —FEMMEBIT presents In Medias Res, an exhibition of on-chain artworks by Los Angeles-adjacent, feminist, and post-cyberfeminist artists who reimagine celluloid-based media for the decentralized realm of Life 3.0. FEMMEBIT is proud to present the following digital artists: Tuna Bora, Petra Cortright, Huntress Janos, Casey Kauffmann/UncannySFValley, Wednesday Kim, Anna Luisa Petrisko, Ellie Pritts, and JJ Stratford.
LA’s sun-drenched and palm-dappled urban sprawl is reformulated by the artists in video gifs and XR to evoke a diffuse and disrelated chaparral cityscape. In Media Res reflects on today’s digital uprootedness from both time-based narratives of the silver screen and any specific geographic turf to provide liminal spaces of belonging.
The Hollywood-adjacent aesthetic is debunked and reinvigorated through works of art that take inspiration from the natural landscape of Southern California. These works question how cities are defined, who owns the land, and in what ways multiple perspectives can exist to cultivate a sense of belonging within urban environments of the imagination as much as in real life.
The curated NFT exhibition drops August 17th on Feral File, a platform that commissions curated exhibitions of digital artwork and is founded by artist Casey Reas. Exhibition runtime starts 14:00 UTC+0 (7:00 AM PST) and activities on Feral File’s platform begin around noon PST. On August 15th, In-person events will take place at NFTuesday LA at El Cid (4212 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90029) at 7 PM PST, followed by an artist talk with Kate Parsons, Casey Kauffmann, and Huntress Janos at 8:30 PM PST.
This exhibition is co-curated by digital artists Kate Parsons and Janna Avner with assistance by creative writer and filmmaker Samantha Proctor.
